PERRLA isn't free. Why should I pay when Zotero and EasyBib exist?

Free tools cost you in other ways – mostly in formatting errors that lose you points, and time spent fixing them. The bigger reason: most free citation tools (Zotero, Mendeley, EasyBib, Citation Machine) run on the same generic open-source reference engine, which produces predictable mistakes. PERRLA's engine is human-built from the actual style manuals, and PERRLA also formats your whole paper, not just the citations.

How is PERRLA different from EndNote or Mendeley?

EndNote is built for full-time researchers managing thousands of sources, with a steep learning curve and pricing aimed at academic and corporate research teams. Does PERRLA work for nursing students specifically?

Yes – nursing students are the largest group of PERRLA users by a wide margin, partly because APA is the required style across nursing programs (ADN, BSN, MSN, DNP). What about ChatGPT? Why use PERRLA when I can ask AI to write my citations?

Because ChatGPT and other LLMs hallucinate references – they invent DOIs, make up author names, and fabricate journal articles that don't exist. We see fake AI-generated references constantly from students who got burned. PERRLA looks up real sources by their actual DOI, ISBN, or URL.
