Accuracy on real sources

We ran the same sources through both tools, and gave Zotero its best possible output each time, including the workarounds its users rely on. For many common sources entered carefully, both tools get it right. Here is where they part ways:

Imported journal titles. APA 7 uses sentence case for article titles. Zotero imports titles the way the publisher sent them, usually in title case, and its own documentation leaves converting them to you, one title at a time. PERRLA’s form produces sentence case.
Retracted articles. APA 7 requires marking a retracted source. PERRLA has a retraction section in the form. Zotero has no way to record a retraction, so the retracted 1998 Wakefield MMR paper cites as if it stood.
A U.S. Supreme Court case. Filling in every Zotero field for Brown v. Board of Education produces “Brown v. Board of Education, 347 U.S. 483 (Supreme Court of the United States 1954).” The correct form leaves the court out: “Brown v. Board of Education, 347 U.S. 483 (1954).”
Nursing measurement instruments. Scales like the Braden Scale have their own reference type in PERRLA. Zotero has no type for them, and the workaround is to enter one as a webpage.
Republished and translated articles. PERRLA records where and when an article was first published. Zotero has no fields for the original volume, issue, or pages.

In all, 12 of PERRLA’s 47 reference types have no usable equivalent in Zotero, including executive orders, constitutional amendments, grants, and press releases.
